Once, she saw him. Lying on his bed. Naked. The first naked man she had seen and he was beautiful. Now Alessia hides in the laundry room when he is at home. L. James. An X-rated Made in Chelsea perhaps? There is no Christian and Ana. Instead of a businessman and a student we get a playboy and a scrubber. The setting is London. The storyline more...criminally inclined. The sex scenes seemed more tame but perhaps I am more worldly after reading the Shades trilogy. </span><span style="font-family: helvetica;">The Mister was a quick read, amusing in places, tense in others. I liked Alessia, she was resilient. Again it was a rescue read - they both rescue each other but</span><span style="font-family: helvetica;"> i</span><span style="font-family: helvetica;">t was the trafficking storyline that really held my interest. Human trafficking is a heinous act and is increasing - across England and Wales, 5144 modern slavery offences were recorded April 2018 to March 2019 and bringing it into reader's awareness can only be a good thing. </span></div><br /></div><br /><br /></div><br /><br /><p></p>LibraryGirlhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07977525292525937805noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5285076142016892927.post-25314164063167697222020-04-12T09:43:00.001-07:002020-04-12T09:43:31.034-07:00Fallen<div style="text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">I am aware I am very late to this particular YA party. Fallen was published in 2010 and is the first in a series of four books. There was huge hype about it when it came out with Lucinda and Daniel having enough fans to topple the Edward and Bella Twilight 'ship. It was this hype however that kept me from reading Fallen and, true to its title, it had fallen from my memory and been packed away into a TBR box.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">This year I decided not to go on a book buying ban (I mean...could you imagine!) but instead actually read the books I own rather than read borrowed ones (I work in a public library). It was because of this that I uncovered Fallen and gave it a go.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">I am sorry to say I have not 'Fallen' in love with the story. Or with Lucinda and Daniel. Or with any part of it other than the cover art (gorgeous). It is an easy read but I found it sooooo slow and therefore tedious. The action that did occur fell flat until about the last 100 pages during which **SPOILERS INCOMING** my favourite character died and it was all just a bit...meh.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">The premise is that Lucinda and Daniel are meant to be. Over and over again. The problem is Daniel is a fallen angel which means they can't be together and when they do get together, Lucinda dies - usually when they kiss. This time is different. Lucinda killed a guy when she kissed him which got her sent to this creepy reform school which is actually a front for the angels. When she and Daniel do lock lips, she's still breathing. Cue celebrations and research but of course, not everyone is happy that Daniel and Luce are together again.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">As I said, it is the first of four books and I would have passed it on to a charity shop but as I looked at the front again, discovered it had been personally dedicated and signed by Lauren herself. Awwww! I haven't met Lauren so I am guessing my cool colleagues at School's Library Service did an event with her and brought me a book back. I shall therefore be keeping the book and may even try Torment - the next in the series (after I've emptied another couple of these TBR boxes).</span></div>

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Published 15 June 2014 by Arcadia Books</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">This novel is described as <i>crime noir. </i>Dark and at its most terrifying. While I found this a dark read - as most are - I did not find it terrifying. This may please or disappoint you depending on the crime genre you prefer.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Set in the Northern English borders (hurrah) DI Joni Pax and DCI Hector 'Heck' Rutherford are investigating a murder at an Albanian-run brothel. Their suspect is on the run and bodies soon start piling up as Joni and Heck try to solve the crimes and take the Albanian mafia down.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Expect strong language, sexual scenes and violence.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">I was a little nervous in starting this book as I expected it to be too gritty, however I was very quickly hooked on the tense plot and whip-smart twists. I felt really invested in Joni and Heck - both through their backstories and with their actions in cracking this case. As a duo, they work well. I see a fatherly respect building between them. The setting was pleasantly unusual - not East London or inner city Manchester but the rural town of Corham with cameos of Newcastle-Upon-Tyne and Roman Northumberland.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">I would have absolutely picked up another Sam Alexander novel to read (which is apparently the pseudonym of a highly respected crime writer) were there any more published but at least feel I can now say I am a fan of Police procedural crime fiction.</span></div>

<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">First up, this is the sequel to Wolf by Wolf. If you have not read Wolf by Wolf, click away now as there will be spoilers!</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">OK, now that's out of the way, here we go...</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I loved, loved, loved Wolf by Wolf. I had just finished reading it when I went for a job interview (for my current post) and was asked to talk about a book I had recently enjoyed. I remember spelling out Ryan's surname for the interviewer as she wrote the details down so I must have sold it to her. In truth, the YA book sells itself. It is a rich imagining of the world if Adolf Hitler had been successful. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">It has been a few years now since I read Wolf, but managed to get hold of a copy of Blood for Blood and the characters and plot immediately came back to me - always a sign of good writing.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">It begins with failure. Yael's failure - but not through her doing. She is hunted across the world, first followed, then joined by Luka and Felix. Yael fights her way to Germania to see if the resistance survived, to see if she needs to add more wolves to her pack and to see if she can try again. On her way she meets new allies and ghosts from her past. One thing is for certain, the German occupation is threatened as long as Volchitsa breathes. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I did enjoy reading this book, however not as much as Wolf. Yael is a great character - a survivor, and it was great to read another side of her as she interacts with Luka and Miriam.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Unfortunately, I found it a slow read, possibly because Wolf is packed with action, however the end was rounded off satisfactorily (if unfairly!).</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">This is the third of Ryan's books I have read and proudly consider myself a fan. Looking forward to more </span></div>

<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">With a title like that, how could I not pick this up to read? Twitter is by far my favourite social media platform.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Twitter is also the go-to of marketeer Daisy Hobson who spends her days posting updates, photos and tweets both for herself and her employer but, when one fateful night she drunkenly tweets from the wrong account, Daisy finds herself not only without a job and a home but also publicly humiliated as her drunk-tweet goes viral.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Sister Rosie comes to the rescue in the form of a digital detox in Cumbria. Reluctant Daisy is not impressed - especially when she sees the run-down farm (without 3G) that they will be staying in.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Trapped in a crumbling cottage without Wi-Fi, Daisy discovers that with a bit of #DIY and some #TLC its not just the farm that can receive a makeover.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">This is a lighthearted easy read - full of fun. Alongside the sisterly bonding are marriage woes and a unexpected love triangle. Life in the Fell community has never been so entertaining.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">This is the sequel to Just One Day and will make much more sense if you read that book first - its wonderful!</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">It follows Willem as he wakes up in hospital in Paris with the nagging feeling he should be somewhere, with someone...</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">By the time he remembers, Lulu is gone and so are Willem's hopes of explaining - he doesn't even know Lulu's real name.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Over the course of a year we follow Willem as he tries to forget and then find Lulu. We get to meet his family and friends and get a glimpse of his nomadic lifestyle that led him to be performing Shakespeare in Stratford-upon-Avon the day Lulu's tour group were visiting.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I read this YA novel in one sitting. I was impatient to see Allyson (Lulu) and Willem reunite but that's the kind of soppy romantic I am. Willem's story however is still enjoyable and really fleshes out the spontaneous Dutchman we met in Just One Day. I especially enjoyed reading about his time in India and relationship with his mother. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I'm very glad to have finally found out what happened after. I read Just One Day a long time ago and yet Forman's characters came straight back to me. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">If you love your YA romance and travelling, give this duology a try!</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">And the Mountains Echoed</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: x-small;">By Khaled Hosseini</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: x-small;">Published by Bloomsbury 8 May 2014</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: x-small;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: x-small;">This was a Book Club choice and I approached it with trepidation for two reasons. Firstly, I had heard such good things about Hosseini's writing and yet not read his work so I was concerned I would be disappointed as can often be the case surrounding hype, and secondly, that I had not yet read fiction set in Afghanistan and thought I may struggle with the pronunciation of names / locations and understanding the culture of the Afghan people. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: x-small;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: x-small;">Neither concern was founded. This was a wonderful read. It began with the retelling of an Afghan myth - a father abandoning his child to save the rest of the family. This myth becomes reality for 10 year old Abdullah and his younger sister Pari when, in 1952, Pari is given by her father to a rich, childless couple living in Kabul. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: x-small;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: x-small;">I could not put this book down. The characters! The plot! Heartbreaking, fascinating, emotional and tender it left me feeling whole, and wholly in love with the novel. The Book Club members loved it too - those who had read Hosseini before have encouraged me to read his other works; The Kite Runner, A Thousand Splendid Suns and Sea Prayer and more than one revealed they would like to read more myths and folktales from Afghanistan. </span><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: x-small;">My copy now sits on my bookcase, patiently awaiting the other three books. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: x-small;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: x-small;">I'll finish similarly to how I started, but this time with two recommendations. Don't be put off by the unknown or let your confidence get the better of you. Pick up a book and try it. Also, join a Book Club. They are everywhere now - online, at your local Library, in Coffee Shops and Bars. Share your love of reading and dare to be brave in reading something new to you. </span></div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Femme Fatale</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: x-small;">By Guy de Maupassant (Translated by Sian Miles)</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: x-small;">No. 15 Penguin Little Black Classics published 26 February 2015</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: x-small;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: x-small;">Yes, it's another Little Black Classic and now I will tell you why I had a small binge on these books...I was visiting a relative in hospital. It was a two-bus journey and my mind needed to be occupied but not by too much for long. The Little Black Classics saved me from staring out of the bus window and imagining the worst (my relative recovered 😊).</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: x-small;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: x-small;">This LBC took me to 19th century Paris. Ooh la la! Penguin describe de Maupassant as "...the father of the modern short story" and after the enjoyment I found in the Kate Chopin LBC I was very much looking forward to these four shorts.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: x-small;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: x-small;">Cockcrow is an amusing little tale of a man's shortcomings.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: x-small;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: x-small;">Femme Fatale describes an afternoon's boating and an evening encounter with lesbian couples, much to Senator's son Paul Baron's disgust. He has forbade his companion Madeleine from associating with them and his homophobia and jealousy ends in tragedy.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: x-small;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: x-small;">Hautot & Son begins at a partridge shoot where Hautot senior is mortally wounded. his deathbed confession to his son reveals he has a girl in Rouen he has visited every Thursday for six years and asked if his son would look after her. Shocked but resolved, the son visits and does what he can for the woman, and his half-brother he discovers there.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: x-small;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: x-small;">Laid to Rest is a tale told by life-of-the-party Joseph de Bardon about a chance encounter he makes in Montmartre Cemetery. Now, this may sound a little odd but the description of the cemetery is wonderful. I visited Pere Lachaise Cemetery a few years ago whilst on holiday in Paris and Parisian cemeteries are well worth a walk around for the care and creativity as much as the occupants. If I get to return to Paris, Montmartre's is on my to-visit list! Anyway, back to Joseph who happens to meet a very distressed widow at the grave of her husband. A short liaison ensues until one day he happens upon her in that very cemetery being supported in her grief by another man altogether.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: x-small;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: x-small;">The stories were entertaining, fun and very, very French! They gave me much needed light relief and I am looking forward to reading more of de Maupassant's work. </span></div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: x-small;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: x-small;">No. 126 Penguin Little Black Classics published 3 March 2016</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: x-small;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: x-small;">I have read Jane Eyre. It was many years ago mind and a book I should probably re-read at some point. I knew Charlotte Bronte had also written Shirley, Villette and The Professor but I was not aware she had created, along with her brother Branwell, the world of Angria ruled by the Duke of Zamorna. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: x-small;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: x-small;">Stancliffe's Hotel is a short work set in Angria, just after the Lord of Northangerland has led a failed rebellion against the Duke. Charlotte writes of the daily lives of the Angria populous and of the comings and goings at the hotel.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: x-small;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: x-small;">I am sorry to say I didn't get on well with this work. It may have been my mood at reading it but I found it tedious. The most amusing part was when Townshend and Sir William try and fail to fool the 'Rose of Zamorna' into receiving them at her home. I will be passing my copy onto a charity shop and hope it finds a good home with another reader.</span></div>

A Pair of Silk Stockings</h2>
<h3 style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">by Kate Chopin</span></h3>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">No. 66 Penguin Little Black Classics published 26 February 2015</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">This was an impulse purchase I made in Foyles Grand Central and for the princely sum of 80p I came away with this 56 page bind up of five of Chopin's short stories. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Kate Chopin is a new author for me. She was born in 1850, St. Louis USA and died in the same city 54 years later. Her work was first published in magazines including Vogue and Penguin describe her as one of America's most daring writers. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">In Desiree's Baby, Chopin tackles race in a most shocking and brutal way. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Miss McEnders makes a moral stand against illegitimacy yet finds herself the one shamed. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The Story of an Hour is a short tale on the freedom death can provide.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Neg Creol tells us of Chicot who cares for, as best he can, a cantankerous elderly lady in New Orleans.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">A Pair of Silk Stockings is the final story and my favourite. Mrs. Sommers finds herself in possession of $15 - and the predicament of how to spend it for the benefit of her family. She was kept awake with thoughts of shoes and shirtwaists, patching and darning but, on the very day of her enterprise, a faintness came over her and she ended up taking a seat at a counter, her hand coming into contact with the softest material she had ever held. Silk stockings...and reduced to only $1.98! It is the start of the most frivolous day Mrs. Sommers ever had and I was delighted for her.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">These stories are wonderfully crafted with each word perfectly selected. This Little Black Classic has opened my eyes to the beauty of the short story so for that and for the introduction to Kate Chopin, thank you Penguin.</span></div>

<h3 style="text-align: center;">
Published 29 August 2013 The Borough Press</h3>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
This was chosen to read by my library’s book club and I knew I had a copy already at home somewhere. Brilliant! I can actually read a book I own and either shelve it or donate it. I had a dig around in my boxes of unread books, found it and dug in.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Now I’m not normally a scatty person but work had been very hectic, however, I managed to finish my Tracy Chevalier in time for the meeting...hurrah. My triumph was short lived as we all sat down and unpacked the book. I had read the correct author, but not the correct book! Gah! The bookclubbers found this very amusing. I did review At the Edge of the Orchard for them and promised to read The Last Runaway (when I found it).</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
This is now the second Tracy Chevalier I have read and features some of my favourite reading topics. It’s historical fiction, set in a Quaker community in America during the days of slavery. As a child growing up reading the Laura Ingalls Wilder series, any novel that features cabins and crafting and sugaring off is a win for me.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Honor Bright is accompanying her sister Grace from Dorset to America where she will be married. It was never intended for Honor to go but after her intended left the Church to marry another, Honor was keen to escape the pitying glances of her community. At least she would know Grace was settled in her new life, in a new country with her new husband. Tragedy strikes however in the form of Yellow Fever, taking Grace and leaving a grieving Honor alone to travel and break the news to her fiancée, Adam. Travelling between Quaker friends, she makes her was West from New York to Faithwell, Ohio. Once there, she discovers Adam already grieving for his recently deceased brother and supporting his brother’s widow. She is welcomed as a sister but the household atmosphere is strained and Honor knows she will be unable to stay. What will become of Honor Bright?</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I loved this book from start to finish and read it very quickly. I really felt attached to Honor, she is brave, resilient and a little feisty and I found myself hoping her life would would work out well. As I read, I learned a little about the Quaker religion, lifestyle and their views on slavery. I also learned about patchwork quilting (which I plan to have a go at) and read about millinery which I’ve always found fascinating. Set amongst the subterfuge and drama of the Underground Railroad Honor learns to love, live and listen to her conscience, staying true to her faith even in the most testing times. The rich detail brings the novel to life and the author includes historical notes on the Underground Railroad at the back of the novel.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The Last Runaway will be on my ‘Best Books I’ve read in 2019’ list. It’s sitting on my shelf next to At the Edge of the Orchard waiting for more Tracy Chevalier books to join it. I know I have Girl With a Pearl Earring in a box somewhere...</div>

<br />
Hello there!<br />
<br />
I hope you are sitting comfortably, preferably with a scone and a cuppa.<br />
<br />
Today I am hosting a special guest post by Caroline Roberts, author of The Cosy Teashop in the Castle.<br />
<br />
Caroline has very kindly written a piece for us about her time visiting castles in the North of England.<br />
<br />
I was delighted when I discovered the novel is set in Northumberland as I have been lucky enough to holiday there and visit some of these castles...and tearooms!<br />
<br />
So let me pass you on to Caroline:<br />

<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">By Andrew Nicoll</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Published July 17 2015 by B&W</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I read this historical crime novel as part of a blog tour organised by B&W publishing.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Miss. Jean Milne is a spinster of independent means living alone at Elmgrove, a large detached house in the small coastal town of Broughty Ferry.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Concerns are raised with the local police when Miss. Milne is not seen. Her post is uncollected and her laundry cannot be delivered. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Upon entering Elmgrove, the body of Miss. Milne is discovered. She had been tied up, bludgeoned and her body covered with a sheet.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
The novel follows the subsequent police investigation - from the scene of the crime, through to witness statements and identity parades. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
It is discovered Miss. Milne led rather an exciting, racy life and enjoyed flirtation with young men. Scandalous!</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Reports filter through the town of a stranger with a blonde moustache seen near Elmgrove. Is this her killer?</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Based upon true events, I found this novel to be an enjoyable mystery, paced extremely well full of detail and description. I was surprised at the identity of the murderer, will you be?</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Many thanks</div>

Another Heartbeat in the House</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
By Kate Beaufoy</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Published Transworld July 2 2015</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I am very excited to be taking part in my first blog tour and am honoured to have been asked to review Another Heartbeat in the House.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
The book begins with us meeting Edie Chadwick and Ian Fleming -yes, THE Ian 007 Fleming! Ian has a cameo role but Edie is the real star. London publisher, dog lover, heartbroken over a friend's betrayal. Escape comes in the form of an invitation to close up an old house in Ireland, in preparation for its sale.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
It's just what Edie needs to keep her busy and give her a change of scenery so accompanied with her new canine companion Milo, she dons a headscarf, rolls her sleeves up and sets to work cataloguing and clearing the old house.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
When Edie discovered an old manuscript, the booklover inside cannot help but read it, and falls under the spell of Eliza Drury - independent, strong willed mistress of Jameson St. Leger, member of Ireland's aristocracy.Oh, and friend of William Thackeray, and his inspiration for Becky Sharp - one of my favourite females in literature!!!</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
What started out being a light, intelligent read expanded in depth creating a tragic yet affirming story with wonderfully believable characterisation and immensely enjoyable natural dialogue. There wasn't a character there who didn't add to the story and the author's evocative and educational descriptions of Ireland had me fascinated. Another Heartbeat is one of my best reads of the year and has made me want to reread Vanity Fair as soon as I can!</div>

<div align="center">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="color: #990000; font-family: Trebuchet MS;">Scramasax is book 2 in Crossley-Holland's Viking Sagas.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">

<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="color: #990000; font-family: Trebuchet MS;">As is often the case with 'second' books, I did not find Scramasax as enjoyable as Bracelet of Bones but will persevere for the third book's release (date and title unknown).</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="color: #990000; font-family: Trebuchet MS;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="color: #990000; font-family: Trebuchet MS;">Full of adventure, drama and suspense, Scramasax is an enjoyable historical read for young people. Richly descriptive, the book includes a map and useful glossary.</span></div>

<span style="color: black; font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Wars of the Roses: Stormbird by Conn Iggulden</span></div>
<div align="center">
<span style="font-family: Arial;">Published October 10 2013 Penguin Michael Joseph</span></div>
<div align="center">
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial;">Having studied the Wars of the Roses for A-Level history and recently watched (and loved) the BBC adaptation of Philippa Gregory's The White Queen, so I was keen to read this book - and was not disappointed! Conn Iggulden is a new author for me and after reading Stormbird I will certainly be on the hunt for more.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial;">The novel begins with King Henry VI of England's marriage to Margaret of Anjou. Iggulden mixes original characters like spymaster Derrihew Brewer seamlessly with historical figures such as William de la Pole and Richard Neville to tell the story of the marriage - and its consequences for England; the losses in France, the Kentish Men marching on London and the outbreak of unrest and war. The novel ends with the rise of the Yorks.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial;">I studied NONE of this at A-Level (!!!) and so found this book fascinating. The characters, the detail, the descriptions all brought events to life in an uncomplicated and accessible way. Yes, there was some author timescale tweaking but its historical fiction people - and darn good at that! If, like me, you're riveted, you too shall toddle off to your local library and read up on the non-fic accounts too.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial;">Stormbird is a gripping full-blooded beginning to Iggulden's new series set during the Wars of the Roses. I can't wait for the second instalment!</span> </div>

<div align="left" style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="color: #20124d; font-family: Arial;">Poor Georgiana da Silva finds out her fiancée is only marrying her to get control of her brother's gold mines in New Zealand. If her brother met with an 'accident', the gold would be hers or more accurately in Victorian England, her husbands. Dastardly isn't it?</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="color: #20124d; font-family: Arial;">Never fear! Plucky Georgiana has a plan. She disguises herself as ship's boy George and is soon setting sail for New Zealand to warn her brother. Tally Ho George!</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="color: #20124d; font-family: Arial;">George is working under the fiercely swoon-some Captain Harry Trent (think Errol Flynn swashing and buckling about the deck). Its not long before George's game is up and Georgiana is discovered. What will Captain Trent do with her and will she ever save her brother?!</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="color: #20124d; font-family: Arial;">I LOVED this romantic action-packed trip on the high seas! Harry is a great male lead, strong yet sensitive; a rough diamond. Georgie is fun, high-spirited and mischievous. The plot twists and turns had my head spinning and as I got near the end (very late at night) I put the book down to savour the ending rather than rushing through when tired - a sure sign I was hooked!</span></div>

<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="color: #20124d; font-family: Arial;">Romantic shenanigans on the high seas? Aye aye Captain...anchors aweigh!</span></div>

<div align="left" style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="color: #351c75; font-family: Arial;">With this book, I felt I came late to the party as it won the Whitbread Book of the Year in 1995. However, I picked it up after reading the blurb on the back:</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
"Ruby Lennox was conceived grudgingly by Bunty and born while her </div>

father, George, was in the Dog and Hare in Doncaster telling a woman</div>

in an emerald dress and a d-cup that he wasn't married."</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="color: #351c75; font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I was hooked.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="color: #351c75; font-family: Arial;">This book is nothing short of genius and yet so...ordinary, so accessible. It describes the daily lives of the Lennox family through the eyes of their daughter Ruby. The highs, the lows, births, deaths and marriages. Through war, fire and philandering it is a no-holes barred view of the life of a working-class family in York interspersed with snapshots of life for the Lennox ancestors showing us what had been, what could have been and why - to some degree - the Lennox family are the way they are.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="color: #351c75; font-family: Arial;"></span> </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="color: #351c75; font-family: Arial;">Extremely well written, addictive and laugh-out-loud funny with extraordinary characters. It is now one of my favourite books. Read it, you won't be disappointed. </span></div>

<span style="color: #0b5394; font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The Baby and Fly Pie by Melvin Burgess</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #0b5394; font-family: Arial;">Published August 2 2012 Andersen Press</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #0b5394; font-family: Arial;"></span> </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="color: #0b5394; font-family: Arial;">First, please take a moment to appreciate the cover of this YA novel. Don't you just love it? Clean, elegant with that shiny electric blue bursting out from it. Gorgeous!</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="color: #0b5394; font-family: Arial;">Now don't put off by the title. This is not a cannibalistic tale of a pie made of babies and flies.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="color: #0b5394; font-family: Arial;">Fly Pie is an orphan, working for Mother Shelley by sorting rubbish in a London of the future. These kids look for food, metal, even precious things like jewellery that ALWAYS get handed in to Mother Shelley.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="color: #0b5394; font-family: Arial;">One day, Fly Pie finds something he didn't expect. A baby. A baby worth 17 million pounds! Can Fly Pie and his friends keep the baby safe and claim the reward before the Mothers find out?</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="color: #0b5394; font-family: Arial;">The Baby and Fly Pie is the first Melvin Burgess novel I have read. While the story engaged me, I didn't feel a connection to the characters and felt let down by the ending. See what you think.</span></div>

<div style="text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Arial;">Published June 8 2010 Forge Books</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Arial;"></span> </div>
<div align="left" style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial;">While reading this book, I found I had forgotten it was fiction. We have all heard or read about polygamist families - this novel is set in the Utah Blood of the Lamb community. It tells the story of sisters Rachel and Sara who are both due to be married under the orders of the Prophet. They are fifteen years old.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial;">Sara is to be her Uncle's fifth wife - and is distraught. This and other events lead her to question the life she leads and her beliefs. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial;">Rachel has fallen in love, but the Prophet's announcement of her marriage leads to a shocking and violent conclusion. Can the girls escape before its too late?</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial;">Gripping, moving, shocking - this debut novel packs a punch. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #4c1130; font-family: Arial;">Published June 2 2011 Orchard</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #4c1130; font-family: Arial;"></span> </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="color: #4c1130; font-family: Arial;">I wasn't sure about this one. I thought it was another 'issues' YA novel with a hint of crime drama so I certainly didn't expect the Sci-Fi ending.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="color: #4c1130; font-family: Arial;">16 year-old Alison wakes up to find herself in a psychological unit. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="color: #4c1130; font-family: Arial;">She can't remember arriving, why she is there or why her arms are covered in scratches. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="color: #4c1130; font-family: Arial;">Alison has always been...different, and from an early age she learned to hide her differences from others. She knew her Mother thought she was crazy and maybe she is right because all Alison can remember is killing Tori.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="color: #4c1130; font-family: Arial;">I found this book a bit...meh...until three-quarters of the way through when it became really really good! Faraday is a hottie and I hope there will be a sequel - it could be awesome!</span></div>
